About this template

Wedding Bingo is a reception-era game designed to keep guests engaged through speeches, the first dance, and the inevitable lulls between courses. Every guest gets a card with wedding tropes — the speech that goes on too long, the drunk uncle, the catering delay, the classic song at exactly the right moment — and marks them as the reception unfolds.

Played right, it's a shared in-joke that makes the reception more fun for everyone who isn't the couple. Played badly, it upstages the wedding. The difference is how you introduce it.

When to use it

  • Wedding receptions — especially those with long guest lists or several hours of programming.
  • Bridal showers, as a pre-wedding game for the bride's friends.
  • Post-wedding 'debrief' events a week or two later where guests recap.
  • Anniversary parties, with trope cards themed around the couple's own wedding.

Hosting tips

  • Only the couple or their closest crew should introduce this. Coming from a stranger it feels weird; from the maid of honour it's a feature.
  • Hand cards out with the place settings — don't announce it from the stage. The game works better when people discover it.
  • Keep the squares kind. 'Bride cries happy tears' is fine. 'Groom trips over his own feet' is not. This is a celebration, not a roast.
  • Include squares that unlock throughout the evening, not just in the first 20 minutes. Mix fast triggers ('first speech mentions how the couple met') with slow ones ('all three speakers quote a song lyric').
  • Have a tiny prize ready for the first winner — a keepsake from the wedding, a small bottle of champagne, or a novelty medal. Nothing so big it becomes the story.

Variations

  • Reception bingo — squares are trope events during the reception.
  • Speech bingo — a narrower card just for the toasts: 'cries during speech', 'mentions the in-laws', 'accidentally reveals how they met'.
  • Dance-floor bingo — dance songs, groups, and moves. 'YMCA plays', 'grandma dances', 'conga line starts'.
  • Photo bingo — squares describe specific photos to capture ('couple with oldest guest', 'kids at the cake table'). Doubles as a crowd-sourced photography prompt.

Questions people ask

Is this appropriate for a formal wedding?

Formal weddings lean more toward speech bingo or photo bingo than reception bingo — they keep the energy playful without being disruptive. Keep the cards discreet (placed with place settings, not announced from a microphone).

Do we need to tell the couple?

If you're a guest introducing it, yes — always get the couple's blessing first. If you are the couple, you already know.

What prizes work well?

Small, wedding-themed keepsakes: a personalised glass, a photo frame, a voucher for a local restaurant the couple recommends. Something memorable rather than expensive.
